Headcount

The number of people physically present in a room during a service — as distinct from check-ins, registrations or membership.
A headcount is a count of the people actually in the room during a worship service — everyone in the seats at a given moment, whether or not they checked in, registered or belong. It is the oldest attendance metric in the church and still the one most decisions rest on: room capacity, service-time changes, staffing, and every trend line begins with a headcount.
How churches take a headcount varies, and the method decides how much the number can be trusted. Ushers with clickers count sections and add them up; a volunteer estimates from the back; some tools ask a staff member to photograph a section and confirm an estimated total; church management systems such as Planning Center provide a Headcounts field where someone types the number in after the service. Every manual method carries attendance bias — a repeatable skew, usually high — and none of them leaves anything you can check later.

Why it matters for your church: the headcount is the denominator under nearly everything else — average weekly attendance, giving per attendee, engagement and retention ratios, and the growth index all divide by it. A headcount that drifts by ten or fifteen percent moves every one of those numbers with it, which is why the method behind the count matters more than the count itself.
